January's Capricorn new Moon falls on January 1, ushering in the new year of 2014. We've had some big lunations, but this new Moon is a major doozy - a very powerful and incendiary new Moon. We have the Moon, the Sun, Pluto and Mercury all together within a few degrees very closely squaring Mars in Libra, also squaring Uranus in Aries and opposing Jupiter.

This new Moon is such a powerful one that people could feel all kinds of disruptive emotions; exploding at others (or at themselves), running around in circles, remembering old hurts, feeling like throwing everything out, etc. Of course, as always, there are good things about this new Moon, but it will take some managing of the emotions and reactions to get to the kernel of what is good about it.

Having said that, we often feel very much 'alive' with these kinds of energies pushing us forward and it may just be a matter of focus, ambition and determination to prevail that moves us forward to where we want to be. This can be a very ambitious mixture of energies and it can lead us to accomplish great, far reaching and amazing things.

The Sabian Symbol for the new Moon is Capricorn 11: Pheasants Display Their Brilliant Colors On A Private Estate. Quoting from my book The Sabian Oracle: 360 Degrees Of Wisdom:

‘Pheasants Display Their Brilliant Colors on a Private Estate’ is an image of beauty, color and wealth. It pictures a situation of the enjoyment of life’s luxuries. The ‘Pheasants’ are beautiful as they ‘Display Their Brilliant Colors’. They have long tails and brilliantly colored plumage. People are drawn to their beauty and can be awed by their presence. That they are on ‘A Private Estate’ shows an environment of privilege and security.

This can picture going after one’s life goals. Riches, refinement and abundance are everywhere. However, just take care: ‘Pheasants’ can be game birds, so there may be an element of underlying danger. Displays of wealth and beauty can inspire others, but they can also lead to jealousy and begrudging acknowledgments. That this place is pictured as a ‘Private Estate’ signifies that it may need to be protected, and kept ‘Private’.

People who don’t belong there may be able to come and visit, but it may be that they’re really invading someone else’s space or privacy. The visitors need to show respect and courtesy and not presume that they can move in and take over. On the other hand, being ‘Private’, this place may not be truly welcoming to people; they may find it unwelcoming and forbidding in some way. There may be difficulty in keeping up with the amount of work that goes into the maintenance of this ‘Private Estate’ it may take a lot of time to look after the house and grounds.

Who does the work and who appreciates the luxury? Looking after the lawn and the garden can bring a feeling of improved well-being. Regardless of whether you’re a visitor or an occupant, just going out and looking at the beauty of the place, the plants and the wildlife can heighten your day.

Keywords: Glorious houses and estates. Lawns and gardens. Statues and birdbaths. Peacocks, pheasants, swans, etc. Enjoying the riches the environment offers. Large plots of land. Nature reserves. Game birds. Aristocracy and the ruling elite. Beauty, elegance and grace. Fabulous displays of color. Parks.

The Caution: Foolish disregard of pending danger. Feeling that one has to be “on parade” or else they will be overlooked. Issues of standing out from the crowd. Jealousy and envy through things on display. Luxury and beauty or snobbery that excludes. Showing
off. “Do not enter” signs.

It is not easy to describe the sea with the mouth. ~ Kokyu

Nature never says one thing and wisdom another. ~ Decimus Junius Juvenalis

Pluto is almost exactly conjunct (together with) this new Moon. This makes this new Moon a very powerful, transformative, challenging, interesting, insightful, difficult and intense time.

Pluto is on Capricorn 12: A Student Of Nature Lecturing, Revealing Little Known Aspects Of Life. This can be a very interesting degree and it can show things, sometimes secrets, coming to light.

Keywords: Observing what’s around and translating it so others may learn. Green politics. Revealing things and issues the conservatives don’t want revealed. Nature and natural remedies. Science and its rewards and drawbacks. Issues such as global warming. Whistle blowers. Natural healing methods. Documentaries.

The Caution: Radical non-humanistic views. Intellectual smugness. ‘Lecturing’ and browbeating. Modern technological advances that stifle the environment. Lip service to conservation issues.

Mercury is smack on this new Moon as well, it is on Capricorn 13: A Fire Worshipper Meditates On The Ultimate Realities Of Existence. Mercury on this Symbol, especially conjunct Pluto, can have us wondering what the meaning of life really is - what are you here for? What is worth devoting our time and energies to and what isn't? What is life really about? Is there a meaning to it, or is it just one day, and one foot, after the other? Are there mysteries that we should investigate and discover to what life really means?

Great moments in science: Einstein discovers that time is actually money. ~ Gary Larson

Keywords: Self-conquest. Kundalini energy. Playing with dangerous elements to reach a higher state of being. Philosophy. The stories of our lives. Examining life and its meaning. The buzz of being alive. Questions of our very existence. Finding the reasons behind everything. Contemplation and meditation. Incense. The hypnotic spell that fire can cast. Staring into the flames. Throwing oneself into the deep end. The search for core truths.

The Caution: Overestimation of personal power and abilities. Obsession to the point of self-obliteration. One-pointedness. Being intense. Going too deeply. Exhausting oneself trying to discover the meaning of life. Excluding family and friends because of philosophical or spiritual convictions. Not seeing the woods for the trees.

Mars is on Libra 12: Coal Miners Emerging From A Coal Mine and it is exactly squaring the new Moon, Pluto and Mercury. This is a rather 'incendiary' aspect - Mars isn't exactly comfortable in Libra and yet it is spending months and months in Libra due to the fact that it is going retrograde in early March.

Mars in Libra can bring previously suppressed feelings and emotions to the surface, bring about a breakdown in relationships (or a breakthrough with healings taking place), difficulties in diplomatic relations and all kinds of disquiet can erupt. This is a major aspect; to be having Mars squaring the new Moon, Pluto and Mercury, and squaring Jupiter - as well as opposing Uranus.

Keywords: Release from arduous labor. Stopping work. Coming into the light. Deep subconscious healing. Hypnotherapy. Going into dark places. Claustrophobia. Memories from the past or out of nowhere. Things dark and “gothic”. Lung and breathing problems. Persephone emerging. The labyrinth of the mind. The mind flooding. Tunnel vision. Caves. Mines. Digging for answers. Relief and time off. Ghost stories.

The Caution: Gloomy outlooks. Not seeing potentials. Emerging with a “blackened face”. Difficulty breathing. Earning a living being a life and death situation. Working hard for small rewards. Emotional loops. Things hard to escape. Fear of confinement or capture.

Saturn, the ruler of this Capricorn new Moon, is on Scorpio 21: Obeying His Conscience, A Soldier Resists Orders. As with all of the Symbols, this can point to several things, but it feels certain that there will be a lot of finger-pointing at those who are 'letting us down' in some way or another. As usual, officials and those in charge or who have the power are likely to look after their own interests, neglecting what needs to be done.

There may be a suggestion of a draft into the armed forces, or, realisations may come of how we work and work and work without the personal rewards one should be able to expect from such an effort. There may be more coming out about Edward Snowden or Julian Assange, or issues where someone has fled from their 'post' because of pressures or not wanting to follow through on promises previously made.

This is an interesting degree that can be quite harsh - whether it's having to say 'no', refusing to play along with others or finding oneself at the mercy of someone who doesn't play by the rules of the game, this Symbol can have some upsetting consequences, especially when the status quo is something that one feels like rebelling against. Someone is opting out, at least in some way.

We can do that in situations in the real world and we can also do it on the mental and spiritual levels. Opting out may be the only way forward, but there is often something that needs to be let go of, something lost or having to be sacrificed. The trick with this combo of Saturn in Scorpio on this degree is coming to terms with what it is that you do want rather than what you don't or those things that you are just managing to put up with.

This can show situations where we may be expected to perform or respond in a certain way but we've been through enough 'lessons' in life and we are now saying a firm and resounding 'no' and refusing to play along.

Keywords: Personal morality. Doing what one’s conscience dictates. Going against the status quo. Doing the unexpected. Going by the promptings of the inner voice. The consequences of having a conscience. Not coming home. People clinging to each other. Love that restrains.

The Caution: Displaying cowardice or a lack of courage to act. Not doing what one is expected to do. ‘Going over the top’ in a wild and crazy way. Going AWOL. Being the one who lets everyone down. Court Martials. Antisocial behavior. Anarchists. Being “uncommitted” or “unavailable”. Choosing play instead of duty. Goofing off.

Venus is retrograde and will be until February 1st, although the retrograde effects will be with us until Venus clears its shadow around March 1.

Venus is on Capricorn 27: A Mountain Pilgrimage.

Do not seek to follow in the footsteps of the wise. Seek what they sought. ~ Basho

If you wish to know the road up the mountain, ask the man who goes back and forth on it. ~ Zenrin

First there is a mountain, then there is no mountain, then there is. ~ Zen Aphorism

Life at the top is financially rewarding, spiritually draining, physically exhausting, and short. ~ Peter C. Newman

Keywords: Ascent in consciousness. Spiritual, material, corporate or political striving. Having an entourage of people (or wanting one). Aloneness and separation. Setting off to somewhere. Going on a mission. Finding one’s spiritual grounding. Getting back to the purer elements in life. Pure elements.

The Caution: High moral stands with no depth of feeling. Feeling “high above” others. Feelings of being, or acting like, an ascended being. Haughtiness. Intellectual snobbery. People scrambling for the top. The “tall poppy” syndrome.

Jupiter is on Cancer 17: The Seed That Grows Into Knowledge And Life. Jupiter is retrograde and in a grand cross with the new Moon, Mercury, Pluto and Uranus. This makes for some serious stress or decision making and the feeling of an intense need to move forward while, really, there is the realisation that not much is going to break through at this time - it is a time of redoing, regurgitating, re thinking, re writing and re appraising.

Although, of course, there will be exceptions, this is not so much a time for pushing forward with plans, whether old or new, this is more a time for discovering what is worth pursuing and what is not and then building momentum and getting your ducks in a row. Not everything or everybody has the luxury of being able to wait for more opportune planetary lineups, so some will be cutting through and going for the chase. All will be fine, but you may find you need to step back during the process to see what adjustments need to be made as these could make all the difference in the world to the outcomes.

It seems that Jupiter on this degree in Cancer is giving us a second (and third, as it's retrograde) look at what it is that we are 'planting' or ingesting or growing or nourishing or hoping to bring into life. This can also bring up the issue of genetically modified organisms, of course, most specifically GM food.

We are witnessing the ongoing birth of some very threatening outcomes as human beings play God by messing with Mother Nature. When I read about some of the things that science is doing - tampering with the natural order of things, I get the sense that the world is really going quite mad (by the agency of a few people - not the majority - but the majority pay).

Questions include - what are you nurturing? what are you giving birth to? what are you turning your attention to? what are you fertilising? - especially within yourself.

Keywords: Small and careful beginnings leading to a beautiful flowering. Seeding things. New ideas bringing fulfillment. Pregnancy, childbir th and growing up. The growth of knowledge. Embryonic cells. Giving and receiving lessons. The urge to grow. Germination. Reaching towards light. Fertilization. Nourishment. Tender care. Genetic engineering. Transmutations. Teachers and students. The tree of knowledge. The Kabbalah.

The Caution: Rushing and missing vital parts. Arrogance about how much one knows. Being afraid to start a project because of time constraints. Not giving small things the reverence they deserve. Grabbing the fast dollar. Things that get out of hand.

Uranus is still on Aries 9: A Seer Gazes Intently Into A Crystal Ball Before Him. Uranus has been on this degree for what seems to be a very long time. This speaks of the need, the desire or the opportunity, of looking deeply into situations, people or your beliefs, in order to see what might normally be unseen or go unnoticed. New realisations can come through going beyond surface appearances into what is really going on.

Keywords: Flashes of inspiration. Tuning in and looking within for answers. Creative visualizations. Aura readings. Cutting through irrelevant messages. Looking carefully at structure. Seeking perfection. Clairvoyance. Illumination and deep insights. Looking ahead to see the signs.

The Caution: Confused by literal meanings. Not seeing the symbolic message. Always looking this way and that, not at the center. Getting lost in the big picture. Daydreaming and ignoring what’s really going on. Obsessing over what may happen. Needing to know what’s coming up. Being impatient.

Neptune is on Pisces 4: Heavy Car Traffic Linking Two Seaside Resorts. This Symbol can have us rushing around, driving or walking or on the bus, and coming up against traffic or people going in the opposite direction (or, at cross purposes to you), and it can be a bit hard to find true peace and quiet.

Sometimes, we find ourselves in a particular locale or possibility in life, only to find that we want to be somewhere else. So, we jump in our mode of transport and find ourselves somewhere else, only to want to be somewhere else again. Or, it can show just travelling to and fro a lot more than you might ordinarily do. This Symbol can also indicate a very jammed up nervous system or interruptions to the circuits of the body.

All men should strive to learn before they die, what they are running from, and to, and why. ~ James Thurber

Every road has two directions. ~ Russian Proverb

To know the road ahead, ask those coming back. ~ Chinese Proverb

Keywords: Going with the flow. Running back and forth. Having to move continually. Pollution and car exhaust. Rush hour and road-rage. Plans for arrivals and departures. Public holidays. Traffic jams. Traffic banking up. Having trouble making left hand turns. Detours. Packing and unpacking. Luggage. Travel itineraries. Impasses. Nervous systems. Urine therapy. Constant phone calls. Switchboard jams.

The Caution: Creating barriers. Constant traffic stopping the possibility of real human interchange. Claustrophobia. Feeling like there is no escape. Exhaustion due to everyday hustle and bustle. Running out of fuel. Exhaust fumes. Road rage. Accidents. Traffic snarls. Taking the long way round. Blockages.

I’m astounded by people who want to “know” the universe when it’s hard enough to find your way around Chinatown. ~ Woody Allen

The Moon's north node is on Scorpio 6: The Gold Rush Tears Men Away From Their Native Soil. This can have us running towards the next money making venture, the next love affair, towards things that appear to make us happier, give us more opportunities perhaps, the thing that is going to provide the rewards and the "juice" for a happier existence but it can also leave us feeling "a long way from home". There are, however, many wonderful dimensions to this degree and we can indeed find 'gold' and often in unexpected places.

Keywords: Strong desires to move on. The longing and the search for the easy fulfillment of hopes and dreams. Leaving one’s native soil. Having a cause or mission to pursue. Leaving home, people, family. Dropping everything to chase a project. Pilgrimages. The search for riches. Immigration and migration. Listening to clues.

The Caution: Chasing the impossible dream and losing everything. Being unrealistic or opportunistic. Not being content with what one’s got. The grass being greener elsewhere. Lusting after rewards that may be unreal or transitory. Risking what one has for what one could have. Wild goose chases.

Chiron has been on Pisces 10: An Aviator In The Clouds for some time now and just moments after this new Moon it moves onto Pisces 11: Men Traveling A Narrow Path, Seeking Illumination. After a rather long time of rising above situations in order to get a better look at them, it is time to continue on your path, moving towards your objectives and not letting anything deter you from your destination or objective.

Keywords: People “on the Path”. Sticking to one mindset, diet, regimen or habit. Having a cause to follow. Not looking sideways. Awakening one’s base senses in order to progress. Physical ecstasy. Being in the now. Going towards the light. Staying true to self. The promise of light at the end of the journey.

The Caution: Blinded by the light. Not knowing where you’re really going. Disillusionment about what’s been chosen. Being one-eyed about goals and beliefs. The denial of physical pleasure. Puritanical behavior. Distractions that stop forward movement. Narrow mindedness.

The trick with this new Moon is to find one's equilibrium - in amongst some serious challenges to it - to be firm and have your sights set on your goals but to also be accepting and giving, to care about others but to remember your boundaries in amongst it all.

To all All, I wish you a fabulous 2014 - wow, 2014, who woulda thunk it?! Here we are with the brand new possibilities that a new year can bring. May you have a fantastic and rewarding year!
