April full Moon is a total lunar eclipse. Occurring on April 15, some websites and commentators are calling this a 'blood moon'. This is rather spurious and it is something that seems to have been fabricated, as we often find, to make the event seem more 'fated' or a sign of some kind of doom. Having said that, this IS a real doozy of a lunar eclipse, and it is very likely to be a stressful and meaningful time. This eclipse will be visible in the Pacific Ocean region, including Australia, as well as North and South America. The moon will pass south of the center of the Earth's shadow. As a result, the northern part of the moon will be noticeably darker than the southern part. The April 15 eclipse is the first eclipse in a tetrad; that is, four consecutive total eclipses with no partial eclipses in between.

Whether it is thought of as a 'blood moon' or some prophetic doom and gloom, this lunar eclipse is extremely powerful as it forms a very dynamic and rather challenging (and rarely seen) grand cross between (going by Sabian degrees = rounding up one degree) Mercury and Uranus on Aries 14, Mars retrograde on Libra 17, and Jupiter on Cancer 13 and Pluto stationary retrograde on Capricorn 14. That is a grand-cross between Mercury, Uranus, Mars, Jupiter and Pluto. By anybody's reckoning, that is one heck of a configuration for this full Moon. Finding, and keeping, one's equilibrium could be an interesting challenge for many. Especially as the days leading up to and after the eclipse see Mars going over some very, very difficult Sabian Symbols in Libra.

The Sabian Symbol for the Moon in this total eclipse is Libra 26: An Eagle And A Large White Dove Turning Constantly Into Each Other.

The images of the ‘An Eagle and a Large White Dove’ are represented in many facets of our lives. Their symbols can be found in several religions, most notably Christianity and in heraldry and hermeticsm. They represent opposite sides of the same spectrum. The ‘Eagle’ is symbolic of strength, stamina and skyward flight. It is a bird of prey and can be seen as aggressive and domineering. It is also considered to be the king of the birds. The Dove is a symbol of peace, tenderness, innocence and gentleness. When they are ‘Turning Constantly Into Each Other’ they are able to embody a strong sense of grounding in one’s own power at the same time as being aware of and awake to love and the wonderful messages that come from the emotional and spiritual realms, through personal expression.

With this degree, there is most likely a need to mix, and integrate, the principle of  the will with the principle of the emotions. This symbolizes having the will and the strength to love and to do so with energetic conviction. It is the ideal of being strong, but not aggressive; firm without being overly assertive, and confident without being oppressive that creates a sense of peace. Equally it is a sense of peace and love that can energize your convictions into action. However, there may be some confusion around whether to use force or love in this situation. This Symbol may also indicate that somebody’s behavior is unpredictable and sometimes off-putting. Someone may be rather schizoid and flounder around from one response to another, leading others to wonder what sort of response they are likely to receive at any given time. This could be a result of a chemical imbalance, the use of drugs or alcohol, or merely their personality. Using moderation and the alternation of these responses will probably lead to a solution - being firm and yet kind.

Keywords: Tempering one’s will with love and bolstering up one’s emotional responses with strength. Cooperation of mind, will, spirit and heart. Schizophrenia. Eagles and doves. Being strong and soft at the same time. Adopting the attitudes of spirit, power and love.

The Caution: Being “all over the place” with reactions. Being changeable. Not acting for the purpose of a definite outcome. Confusing others with conflicting behavior. Not knowing what to expect next. On one minute, off the next.

The Karmic Condition of this full Moon is Libra 25: The Sight Of An Autumn Leaf Brings To A Pilgrim The Sudden Revelation Of The Mystery Of Life And Death. This is a wonderful degree, and one which can bring insights and meaning in the simplest moments. Here in Australia, where I am, we are going into autumn and the leaves are falling, so this feels particularly relevant to me. Of course, in the northern hemisphere, folks are going into spring - a wonderful time of budding and growth.

This Symbol can indicate an insight into something that can change the course of one’s life. The ‘Autumn Leaf’ in this Symbol brings to the ‘Pilgrim’ the sudden understanding of the cycle of life, death and rebirth. The ‘Mystery of Life’ seems to unfold before the ‘Pilgrim’s’ inner vision. The ‘Pilgrim’ can see that the seed has grown into the tree and the tree’s leaves have now fallen with the change of the seasons, ready for the new birth in the spring. The ‘Autumn Leaf’ becomes the composted material that nourishes the new seeds and fosters and nourishes the new growth. Often we go through our lives without noticing the information that can be gained from looking at small or seemingly insignificant things. The ‘Revelation’ that is experienced can change one’s life, if time is taken to stop long enough to really look into it. At this point, you may feel that you’ve learnt much and grown tired of seeking information for life’s meaning through more conventional channels. Look for the answer to your problem in simple, everyday moments. They are fleeting, but they are around you. Look for the signs, they can have profound effects.

Keywords: Seasonal adjustments. Fleeting inspiration. Seeing things in their own time. Spiritual revelations. Conversations with God. Feeling blessed. The beauty and timelessness of nature. Contacts with nature spirits. Angelic visions. Photography and having a photographic mind. Being here now. Pilgrims and their journeys. The Hadj pilgrimage. Solving problems. Quick and deep minds. Snapshots in time.

The Caution: Focusing on things that have no lasting value or are no longer relevant. Looking for answers in everything, therefore missing out on the picture that’s right in front of you. Making a big deal out of insignificant or everyday occurrences.

The Quest Degree (the degree following) this full Moon is Libra 27: An Airplane Sails High In The Bright Clear Sky. Mars was on this degree for several days, retrograde, when the Malaysian Airlines jetliner went missing. The Karmic Condition of Venus (the ruler of this Libran lunar eclipse) is on Pisces 10: An Aviator In The Clouds, so flying, aviation, navigating one's way, rising above things so we can get a heightened perspective are very much accentuated in this lunar eclipse. Even the Sabian Symbol for the lunar eclipse is about 'flying' (or the capacity for flying).

Keywords: Transcending difficulties or escape from reality. Optimism that knows no bounds. A bird’s eye view of things. Detachment. Objectivity. Chemical influences. Freedom from life’s  routine. Pilots and planes. Clear air turbulence. Roller coaster rides. Awareness of up and
down, left and right, in and out. The sense of destination. Decreasing gravity. Acceleration of time. Fish eye lens. The need for navigation.

The Caution: Difficulty in seeing the true details of what’s going on. Escape from reality. Running out of fuel. Egoism. Playing with gravity. Disconnection from the everyday world.

The Sabian Symbol for the Sun is Aries 26: A Man Possessed Of More Gifts Than He Can Hold. This degree can show the need to let go of some things from your life, especially if you find that they are no longer working for you. It can be people, places, belongings, desires, objectives that you once cherished perhaps. It can also show people that are so incredibly talented and gifted that they find it difficult to manifest or 'use' all of their talents... one can find themselves juggling with things and wondering what would happen if they dropped the ball.

Keywords: Potentials and the obsessions they can bring. Obsessions about “having things” or achieving goals. Counting one’s blessings. Jack-of-all-trades. Having to drop the bundle as one more thing is added. Being talented and blessed. Enormous responsibilities. Wanting to contain all possibilities. Storage. So many things to do – so little time.

The Caution: Not being able to focus on one issue at a time, or on ideas of real worth and therefore not really achieving anything. Inability to gain or contain everything that is desired. Ambition that knows no bounds. Greediness and insatiability. Being told that you can’t have what you want. Things piling up.

The Quest Degree of the Sun is Aries 27: Through Imagination, A Lost Opportunity Is Regained. I don't always quote all of the before and after Symbols in my newsletters - if I did, the newsletters would be even longer than they are now (!), but I wanted to mention this Symbol as it is the degree of the Sun the day after the eclipse and it is a very positive and useful degree to keep in mind. If you feel like you've had to give up something that once was very important to you, this Symbol can point the way to you recovering or regaining somehow. It may not be the exact thing (person, relationship, situation, etc) that you had to let go of, but it could in fact lead to a better outcome. It is through 'imagination' that a 'lost opportunity' can come back into your life - even when you may feel that there is no hope.

Keywords: Creative imagination and visualization. Hopes renewed when all seemed lost. Second chances. Last minute reprieves. Retracing your steps. Judging things to be positive when once they were thought to be negative. Being exonerated or forgiven. Pardons giving release. Imagineering. Retrieving things. Making up for lost ground or time. Changing your mind, therefore changing your outcome.

The Caution: Relying on self-pity. Denying the imagination to recover the situation. Not noticing solutions to problems. Letting chances for recovery disappear through inaction or laziness. Going over and over lost opportunities. Finding it impossible to let go. Staring at loss and not realizing what one has.

Venus, the ruler of this Libran lunar eclipse, is on Pisces 11: Men Traveling A Narrow Path, Seeking Illumination. This speaks of the need to keep heading towards your goals, to keep that 'light at the end of the tunnel' in your sights.

Keywords: People “on the Path”. Sticking to one mindset, diet, regimen or habit. Having a cause to follow. Not looking sideways. Awakening one’s base senses in order to progress. Physical ecstasy. Being in the now. Going towards the light. Staying true to self. The promise of light at the end of the journey.

The Caution: Blinded by the light. Not knowing where you’re really going. Disillusionment about what’s been chosen. Being one-eyed about goals and beliefs. The denial of physical pleasure. Puritanical behavior. Distractions that stop forward movement. Narrow mindedness.

The Karmic Condition of Venus is Pisces 10: An Aviator In The Clouds. More planes, more navigation, more flying.

Keywords: Elevated views. Always seeing the best in people and things. Peace and tranquility. The longing for transcendence. Not seeing limitations. Being in a refined “head space”. Mastery. Flight, planes, pilots. Avoidance of time constraints. Pollyanna attitudes. Free flights of fantasy and escapism. The need for accurate navigation. Being in charge of the controls. Seeking higher truths. Maps. Compasses. Global satellite positioning. Clouds. Mist and fog. Hang-gliding.

The Caution: Sailing through difficulties or missing what’s really going on. Escapist use of alcohol and drugs, etc. Lack of grounded energy or reality. Being unearthed. Escaping responsibilities. Isolating oneself. Completely missing the point. Feeling high and mighty and above everyone else, particularly with intellectual skills. Wrong turns. Missing the signs. Feeling like you're living in a fog. Disconnecting from others, leading to isolation. Losing the plot. Taking huge risks. One's head being separate from the body.

Mercury and Uranus are conjunct (on the same degree) - Aries 14: A Serpent Coiling Near A Man And A Woman. This can be a super-charged degree, especially with the aspects that Mercury and Uranus are making (opposite Mars, squaring Jupiter and squaring Pluto). There can be a lot of intense feelings around relationships, sex, religious beliefs and there can be a feeling of someone or something coming between people, breaking them up or causing problems, often out of fear or jealousy. This Symbol can also be one of having a very strong sense of archetypal knowledge - it is a very powerful degree. It can show finger pointing at and suppression of the feminine.

Keywords: Enticement. Allurement. Revealing archetypal knowledge that may not be ‘socially acceptable’. Temptations. The Adam and Eve story. Jealousy. Sexual instincts. Life and death issues. Relating based on control. Kundalini energy. Realizing polarity. Individuation. Eating the Apple. The “knowledge of good and evil”. Having one’s eyes opened. Marking one’s territory.

The Caution: Feeling guilty. Being afraid to express one’s feelings. Basic instincts and sexual energy. The fear of knowledge, secret or otherwise. Using sexuality as a control device. Disgust or distrust of the body. Sexually transmitted diseases. Hiding nudity or sexuality. Being thrown out of paradise.

Mars is retrograde on Libra 17: A Retired Sea Captain Watches Ships Entering And Leaving The Harbor. Mars has in the week leading up to this eclipse been on Libra 19: A Gang Of Robbers In Hiding and Libra 18: Two Men Placed Under Arrest Are Brought Before The Tribunal Of Society To Give An Accounting Of Their Actions and Mars is retrograding back to aspect more closely Jupiter, Uranus and Pluto (along with the faster moving Mercury). Mars here seems to be saying to take some time out, contemplate your next moves and to ease up on the frenetic pace that life has been moving at. It would seem that there won't be much time for contemplation and meditation, but if you can find a quiet moment it would be good to take advantage of it.

Keywords: Memories and peaceful contemplation. Disconnection from the past and concentrating on more immediate circumstances. Fatigue and the need for rest. Being a spectator rather than a participant. Being part of an audience. Voyeurism. Turning to more domestic pursuits. Writing one’s memoirs. Nostalgia. Safe ports or harbors. Retiring from public life.

The Caution: A cop-out, escaping from reality. Relying on past experiences. A need to defend one’s shoreline. Losing faith in life. Staring at lost opportunities and times gone by. Not wanting to participate in life. Losing interest in the struggle. Disillusionment. Frustration. Boredom.

Jupiter is on Cancer 13: A Hand, Which Is Held Out Receptively, Is Remarkable For The Suggestion Of Character In Its Prominent Thumb. Jupiter is suggesting that we reach out to others and show how much we love and appreciate them.

Keywords: Openness and willingness to extend oneself to others. The handshake and the need for it. Being approachable and friendly. Palmistry and palm reading. Having a firm will. Introductions. Strong character. Flexible behavior. Hitchhiking.

The Caution: An aggressiveness and overbearing nature. Feeling that one is better, or stronger, than others. The smooth handshake that manipulates to impress one’s personality. Unbending and dominant behavior. Taking over situations regardless of what others want. Defensive, insecure, unsure, introverted. Blocking human exchanges.

Saturn is retrograde on Scorpio 22: Hunters Protected By Heavy Clothing Are Shooting Wild Ducks. This can be a very difficult degree and it can be about feeling picked on or vulnerable or like you could be picked on or taken out by someone stronger or better armed than yourself. It can also show people campaigning and caring about the rights of those who can't protect themselves in society.

Keywords: Satiating one’s aggressive desires. Being able to hit the mark. Putting up with violence in one’s life, whether physical, mental, spiritual or emotional. Road, and other, types of rage. The armed services and their responsibilities. War. Terrorism in its many forms. Camouflage. The armed forces. Armaments.

The Caution: Exploitation of those who are more vulnerable. Taking unfair advantage of the innocent or the less experienced. Feeling like a sitting duck. Nowhere to run or hide. Hormones running rampant. Mindless violence. War crimes tribunals. Gang warfare. Indiscriminate actions.

Neptune is on Pisces 7: Illuminated By A Shaft Of Light, A Large Cross Lies On Rocks Surrounded By Sea And Mist. This is another rather difficult degree and it can show misplaced loyalties and, for some, there can be feelings of devastation and loss. Some may find their faith being tested and a sense that what they've built in life has come to nothing or very little.

Keywords: Renewed dedication after loss. Looking for signs of hope and recovery. Coming to terms with loss or failure. Rocks, mist, howling winds on coasts. Crosses of faith. Important and substantial sacrifices. Being devastated by events. Being in the “spotlight” in difficult times. Finding the way through the dark. The need for sacrifice. Alternative religions. Stepping outside religious boundaries.

The Caution: Lost faith. Hopes dashed. Giving up. Being shattered by the constraints of life. Depression. Feeling like one is being sacrificed, sometimes for nothing. Unable to see through the fog. Scorn, persecution and attack because of religious or social reasons. Hopelessness. Things grim, dark and foreboding.

Pluto is on Capricorn 14: An Ancient Bas-Relief Carved In Granite Remains A Witness To A Long Forgotten Culture. It is interesting how many 'ancient cultures' are being found at the moment, really quite amazing. This can also point to a difficulty in letting go of the past.

Keywords: Anonymous immortality. Things written or carved in stone, or concrete. Permanent records. Clues from the past. Things that should be shaped and changed with the times. Pieces of art or sculpture. Things that belong in a museum. Inscriptions and carvings. Ancient civilizations and their relics. History.

The Caution: Limitations that don’t allow for changes. Old and outworn situations. Things carved in stone that cannot, or will not, ever change. Memories out of the past that keep one frozen in time. Feeling stuck, like no growth is possible. Frigidity of feelings because of things that have happened.

Chiron, the Wounded Healer and The Stories We Tell Ourselves, is on Pisces 16: In A Quiet Moment, A Creative Individual Experiences The Flow Of Inspiration. Here is another indication of the need to take some time out to contemplate or find quiet moments that can bring inspiration.

Keywords: Creativity inspired from above. Openness to higher forces and ideals. Realizations. Dreams. Channeling thoughts and feelings. Messages from one’s higher self. Finding solutions. Moments of calm leading to resolutions. Free flowing thoughts. The gift of inspiration. Turning on the tap of creativity. Blockages unblocked.

The Caution: Being too tired to meditate. Choosing to be unaware or to sleep instead of thinking purposefully. Not talking about what needs to be said. Having a lot of ideas that don’t translate into reality. Shutting off from others. Loud voices in the head.

The Moon's north node is on Libra 29: Mankind's Vast Enduring Effort To Reach For Knowledge Transferable From Generation To Generation. Teaching and learning and passing on knowledge and finding vehicles for doing so are a big part of the node's message at the moment.

Keywords: Interpreting and conveying beliefs and ideas. The desire to pass on something to others. Handing down possessions or knowledge. Knowledge being changed, modified or updated. Teaching by example. The wisdom of the ancestors. Research into history. Striving for answers. Books and the spoken word. Encyclopedias and reference books. The gift of knowledge.

The Caution: A belief that one knows it all. Information, knowledge or riches inherited by only the select few. Reliance on tradition. Fundamentalism. Doing what’s always been done, regardless of the reason.

The Moon's south node is on Aries 29: The Music Of The Spheres. I really love this degree - it is a fabulous Symbol. Gustav Holst, the composer of the orchestral suite The Planets, had his Moon's node and Neptune here.

Keywords: Voices bringing messages. Attuning to the messages inherent in astrology. Harmonies, chords, keys, octaves. Things heard. Natural harmony of life. The beauty of the planets. The measurement of time. Circadian rhythms. Dancing to the wind. The humming of bees. Days of the week. The sound of water over rocks or crystals. The planets speaking through or to you. Sending love. The atomic clock. Harmonics. Musical ratios. Numbers. Numerology. Sound healing.

The Caution: Inflating rational ideas. Delusion or enlightenment? Getting lost in abstractions. Rejecting what’s obvious on an intuitive level in favor of more intellectual answers. Loving the sound of your own voice. Not listening to obvious messages.

So, the trick with this eclipse and this time is to keep one's cool, to keep moving forward towards your objectives, to make sure you are taking a good bird's eye look at what's going on around you and to realise what is and what isn't possible at this point of time. Mars and Saturn, and now Pluto, being retrograde can have this coming period feeling rather frustrating, but as always, it is a meaningful time. Keeping a cool head is probably the major challenge!
